Evolution of Browsers

It is a piece of software that we probably used everyday. Simple browser existed as early 1991 to keep player emerged in the first round called "browser wars" :- Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)

The release of Internet Explorer 4 moves forward and popular with their special capability, which gave it share of the desktop user market.


Rendering Engines - Browsers were considered a "black box". There was no real way for users to peek inside and figure out how they work. Today, open-source browsers allow us to explore their source code and understand their internal operations. this engine is responsible for displaying the requesting HTML, on the browser screen. Chrome, Firefox and IE are main player in the browser market to maximizing the screen of browser rendering engine power are used.


  • Netscape - Marc Andreessen started his own company leaving NCSA and called it Netscape. In 1994 he presents Netscape Navigator which was the most popular browser of mid 1990's. The main advantage of Netscape is that it shows texts and images during the time of downloading.
  • Internet Explorer - Microsoft released Internet Explorer 1 in August 1995. since than IE became a vital actor in the market of browsers. One year later IE 3 was released with the feature of CSS and Also it was able to play MIDI sounds and display jpg/gif images. The latest version is IE 8 released on 19 March 2009 with the feature of CSS, RSS and AJAX but despite that IE 9 is very expected to let the users know how microsoft prepares future with HTML5 and CSS3.
  • Mozilla Firefox - This project was born in 1998 and its root are in the release as an open source of Netscape. On 5 June 2002 Mozilla 1 was released and it was a result of World Wide contribution. Firefox 2.0 became available after 2 years of changes and upgrading. The new features were that we have a close button on every tab, after an unexpected crush the session is restored, inline spell checking for text boxes, anti-phishing. Firefox 2.0 became a competitor for IE and the war expanded.
  • Google Chrome - Om 2 September 2008 google chrome launched in 43 languages and it became a huge success gaining continuously more users. Google chrome 2 comes with stability and speed, the next version launched on 15 September 2009 improved speed with 25%. Probably we can guess that 4th and 5th version bring more speed and stability together with implementations of new standards of HTML5 and CSS3.
