Expert System in Artificial Intelligence

  • An Expert system is a set of program that manipulate the encoded knowledge to solve the problems in a specialised domain that normally requires human expertise
  • An Expert system knowledge is obtain from an expert source and coded in a form suitable for the system to use in reasoning mechanism
  • The expert knowledge must be obtain from specialist or other sources like text, electronic docs, databases, knowledge bases, reports, newspapers, news channels, articles, soft-copy of document, research.
This in turn requires training and experience in specialised fields such as medicine, textile, leather, hardware, software, engineering, designing, modelling, expertise skills in database, programming language etc.

First knowledge is acquired and then encoded in some appropriate form loaded into a knowledge base, tested, refine continuously throughout the life of the system.

  1. expert system uses knowledge rather than data to control solution process
  2. knowledge is encoded and maintain as an entity or object that is well isolated from the control program
  3. expert system fully explain while required information is essential and how a particular conclusion can be made
  4. expert system often reason with meta knowledge
  5. expert system possesses vast quantities of domain specific knowledge
eg:- Name                                Domain                            Function
      CASNET                       MEDICINE                    DIAGNOSIS
    DENDRAL                  CHEMISTRY             DATA ANALYSIS
     MYCIN                          MEDICINE                      DIAGNOSIS

Application of Expert System :-
  1. diagnosis and troubleshooting of devices and system of all kinds
  2. planning and scheduling
  3. financial decision making
  4. knowledge publishing
  5. process monitoring and control
  6. design and manufacturing
